So I wrote up a list of the Top 5 features in the upcoming release of Flash CS4 (Deisel). While I have been working on a collection of Flash tools to help productivity, it struck me that there is so much going into the next release of Adobe Flash that it would be nice to gather a list of all the known features. Also, I wanted a quick reference list to which new features are confirmed and which aren’t.
That said, this isn’t going to give much detail on each feature Flash CS4. Also, just in case you have been searching for it, Adobe has given no indication for the Flash CS4 release date. Speculation is that it will be released sometime between August 2008 and March 2009. Anyway, here’s the list:
Feature

Conf.
Flash CS4 Feature Description
object-based tween engine
yes
Changes the way motion tweens will be authored. No more keyframes. |
inverse kinematics
yes
Allows character-style, kinematic, jointed-animation capabilities without any coding necessary |
new 3-D features
yes
Allows manipulation of a 2D object as if it’s 2-dimensional surface is being rotated and tumbled in a 3D space. |
new stage rendering engine
yes
Means we will be able to see the timeline animations and video-clips previewd on the stage at authoring time — no need to “preview” the scenes or movie anymore. |
XFL-format
maybe
Allows all FLA assets to be referenced via an XML-type file. With this, you can edit text and images outside of Flash CS4… and when you opened up the FLA, those change content items would be automatically changed throughout the FLA. |
64-bit support
yes
Makes use of 64-bit processing capabilities. |
GPU used by Hydra / PixelBender
yes
The ability to create custom filters and effects using a new image processing language called ‘Hydra’ is enhanced by the fact that Hydra will take advantage of the end-users GPU (graphics card). Note: Hydra is now called “PixelBender”. |
Bi-Directional text
maybe
Support for bi-direction text and languages. Even the ability to run text vertically and a few other cool text layout features. |
2880 x 2880 bitmap limit removed
yes
Flash has had a limit on the size of bitmaps to prevent memory problems. This limit has been lifted or increased. |
Typed arrays
maybe
The ability to type array elements as vectors. |
Mobile convergence
kinda
If you develop content for the Flash-Lite player, things are supposedly going to get better. You won’t have to adjust code/content for Flash-Lite player because somehow it will all work the same. |
So there’s the list that I have so far. I am constantly poking around out there to find out more of the Flash CS4 features– or to find out when Adobe is ready to sell the sucker. My guess: Adobe MAX 2008, Adobe will announce the product is ready for release. In the meantime, post a comment if I’ve missed one, and I’ll add it to the list.
