Adobe Announces Flash CS4 Release Date (almost)

So ever since Youtube vids and rumors and screenshots of CS4 first began appearing on the web almost a year and a half ago, the big question has been “when will Adobe Flash CS4 be released?” Well if you’ve been waiting like I have, you’ll be relieved to know you’ve reached the final stretch. Adobe CS4 (including Flash CS4, of course) will be release at the end of October, 2008.

Adobe didn’t say exactly what day in October, but there you have it. That said, you don’t have to wait any longer to buy it. Adobe is currently accepting advance orders for CS4, so if you want to be first in line to get it when it ships, there is no better way than pre-ordering.

Next question? Cost. If you want to buy Flash CS4, not in a package or anything, it’s stand-alone price is $699. Not cheap. And if you want the better deal, you’ll probably want to throw down for the other goodies, too. Stuff like Photoshop and Illustrator and Dreamweaver… all depends on your needs. To get all those, you’ll be paying for WebPremium or Design Premium at $1,799 or $1,699 respectively. Upgrades are cheaper, of course, but rather than me going down the pricelist, here is the link to Adobe’s CS4 release pricelist.

That’s all for now– except I should give you guys an update on the latest developments in my Flash tools… I’ve been waiting for the release of CS4 so I can make sure the new stuff is compatable on multiple platforms. I’ll have more free Flash Extensions available very soon, so sign up on the notifications list if you want them.

Flash CS4 Release Features List

So I wrote up a list of the Top 5 features in the upcoming release of Flash CS4 (Deisel). While I have been working on a collection of Flash tools to help productivity, it struck me that there is so much going into the next release of Adobe Flash that it would be nice to gather a list of all the known features. Also, I wanted a quick reference list to which new features are confirmed and which aren’t.

That said, this isn’t going to give much detail on each feature Flash CS4. Also, just in case you have been searching for it, Adobe has given no indication for the Flash CS4 release date. Speculation is that it will be released sometime between August 2008 and March 2009. Anyway, here’s the list:

Feature

Conf.

Flash CS4 Feature Description

object-based tween engine
 yes
Changes the way motion tweens will be authored. No more keyframes.
inverse kinematics
 yes
Allows character-style, kinematic, jointed-animation capabilities without any coding necessary
new 3-D features
 yes
Allows manipulation of a 2D object as if it’s 2-dimensional surface is being rotated and tumbled in a 3D space.
new stage rendering engine
 yes
Means we will be able to see the timeline animations and video-clips previewd on the stage at authoring time — no need to “preview” the scenes or movie anymore.
XFL-format
 maybe
Allows all FLA assets to be referenced via an XML-type file. With this, you can edit text and images outside of Flash CS4… and when you opened up the FLA, those change content items would be automatically changed throughout the FLA.
64-bit support
 yes
Makes use of 64-bit processing capabilities.
GPU used by Hydra / PixelBender
 yes
The ability to create custom filters and effects using a new image processing language called ‘Hydra’ is enhanced by the fact that Hydra will take advantage of the end-users GPU (graphics card). Note: Hydra is now called “PixelBender”.
Bi-Directional text
 maybe
Support for bi-direction text and languages. Even the ability to run text vertically and a few other cool text layout features.
2880 x 2880 bitmap limit removed
 yes
Flash has had a limit on the size of bitmaps to prevent memory problems. This limit has been lifted or increased.
Typed arrays
 maybe
The ability to type array elements as vectors.
Mobile convergence
 kinda
If you develop content for the Flash-Lite player, things are supposedly going to get better. You won’t have to adjust code/content for Flash-Lite player because somehow it will all work the same.

So there’s the list that I have so far. I am constantly poking around out there to find out more of the Flash CS4 features– or to find out when Adobe is ready to sell the sucker. My guess: Adobe MAX 2008, Adobe will announce the product is ready for release. In the meantime, post a comment if I’ve missed one, and I’ll add it to the list.

Adobe Flash CS4 Release: Top 5 New Features To Date

Each month, the buzz increases in Flash developer circles about the release of Adobe’s Flash CS4 (Deisel). After oggling every sneak peak I could find, here’s the list of top 5 features I see talked about most:

  1. new tween engine
  2. inverse kinematics engine
  3. new “3D” features
  4. new stage rendering engine
  5. possible XFL-format

Adobe folks say these aren’t even the biggest things in the Flash CS4 release—which is crazy talk. If you don’t know about all these feature, let me go over them one at a time.

The Flash CS4 Tween Engine will mean no more keyframes. This sounds kinda scary for some designers who learned to animate with keyframes. I know. I was one of them. But fear not. As far as I can tell from what I’ve looked at, you can always fall back on a keyframe-like system to make your animation adjustments. But you won’t want to. Adobe is making animation so much easier with this system. You’ll be able to copy and paste and save you animation sequences—and easily swap out the ‘subject’ of your animations. You can just move stuff around on Flash’s authoring stage and the motions are recorded as an animation. This is going to put the joy back into animating for a lot of pre-Flash 6 users.

Combine the tween engine feature with Flash CS4’s inverse kinetics and it’s likely enough to make all those designers specializing in cartoon animation stick with CS4 for the rest of their lives. Animate a walking person and you’ll know what a pain it can be to mess around and get it just the way you want. No more. In CS4 you will be able to just string a few symbols together, add a line of “joints”, and Flash handles the rest. No code. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Crazy.

The next release also use’s new 3D features. I don’t know the full extent of this, so I won’t say much. But one thing it will do is allow you to manipulate a 2D object as though it were a piece of paper, rotated and angled any way you want.

The stage rending engine is cool because you’ll be able to add movie-clips and videos and other stuff to the stage and preview it right there in the Flash CS3 authoring environment—no hitting the “preview movie” command to see how it looks. I’m a big fan of saving time, and that’s exactly what this means.

The last Adobe Flash CS4 feature that I want to point out is one I found out about on Colin Mook’s blog: A possible new XFL format. I don’t know exactly how this works or even if it is a definite for CS4, but Adobe is looking to make the contents of any given Flash FLA file more easily edited than ever before. Imagine editing the text in your FLA without opening up Flash. Or messing with an image in Photoshop, and then when you open up Flash the changes to that image are automatically updated for you! Very cool stuff.

Of course, we still don’t have a release date for CS4 and I suspect that Adobe won’t spring it on us until Flash is just a few months away from delivery. But soon. Soon. I can only hope it is soon.
